The Frank Waters and Golden Quill Literary Awards Luncheon

To encourage and recognize exemplary national and local writers, the Friends of the Pikes Peak Public Library presents two awards at an annual luncheon, its signature event.
The Frank Waters Award celebrates its namesake’s love of the American West. The $1,000 award is given to a writer who strives to foster literary excellence and a recognition of the people, culture and landscape of the American West.
The Golden Quill Award is a $500 prize given for literary achievement by an outstanding local author, illustrator, photographer or publication. Its recipient often is also engaged in fostering literacy in the community.
Congratulations to the 2023 honorees:
FRANK WATERS AWARD - W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear

“There are countless other mountains once held sacred throughout the United States. Pike’s Peak in Colorado, at whose foot I was born, was one of the most notable. The Ute Creation Myth centered upon it, and the mythical origin parallels stories of the Flood....Years later, when I was a boy, it still exerted its spell, drawing trainloads of visitors from all over the world…
I grew up with it, nurtured by its constant living presence.”

Meet the Author

Nothing beats tucking into a good book...except maybe getting to meet the author who wrote that book.
The Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District offer a quarterly event to hear from a different local author on the magic behind their writing. Different genres, different authors and a little something for everyone.
This event is free for all attendees!!
Watch the Event page for our next Meet the Author date!
